ChatGPT now searches chats, projects and files

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has released a unified search for past chats, projects, images and documents. The feature is available on the web as well as in the apps for iOS and Android.

The search is opened from the sidebar. There you can write a word or a phrase and then use filters to limit the hits by content type. A selected hit opens the chat, project or file where the content is located.

According to OpenAI, the function is globally available for all ChatGPT subscriptions. The company does not specify in its release notes how far back each content type can be searched or how quickly brand new material becomes searchable.

The search result should be treated as a shortcut, not as a conclusion. Check the date, context and version of a file you are opening before reusing the material in a decision or delivery.

Anyone who uses ChatGPT in multiple projects no longer needs to remember exactly where a previous answer or document is located. It can save time when an old research thread, picture or file has to be found again. At the same time, clear project names and thoughtful handling of sensitive material are becoming even more important.
