EU experts want to reduce Europe's dependence on foreign AI

A new report points to computing power, capital and access to models as crucial issues. These are recommendations, not a new decision.

The EU's AI Office has published a report with conclusions from an expert forum with over 100 participants. The group has discussed how Europe can build stronger capabilities for advanced AI and be better able to choose, control and benefit from different models.

The report points out, among other things, that much of the development of the most advanced models takes place outside the EU. According to the experts, Europe has strong research and many AI specialists, but less computing power and growth capital than development requires.

This is not a new EU decision, a decided budget or a rule that comes into force now. The report summarizes the experts' recommendations and is to be used in the AI Office's further work.

Swedish companies and authorities are dependent on which AI services are available, where the data is processed and how easy it is to change suppliers. More European capacity may in the long run provide more choices, but the report changes nothing for the user today.
