Find old chats, projects and files in ChatGPT

OpenAI has released a common search in ChatGPT. It can find past chats, projects, images and documents from the same search field. The feature is available on the web, in iOS and Android and, according to OpenAI, is available globally on all ChatGPT plans.

The search is opened from the sidebar in ChatGPT. Write a word or short phrase that you remember from the material. The results can then be filtered by content type, so an old conversation can be distinguished from a file, image or project.

Use a clear and unusual keyword instead of a broad query. For example, if you're looking for an earlier plan, a project name or a specific wording may yield better hits than the word plan. Open the result and check the date and context before continuing the work.

The search makes it easier to reuse previous work, but it doesn't change what should be saved in ChatGPT. Customer data, student information, social security number and other sensitive data must only be handled when the rules of the business and the selected account's data conditions allow it.

OpenAI describes the feature in its release notes, but does not publish a full technical explanation of how results are ranked. A missing search result therefore does not prove that the material is missing. Also check the project or original content type if you can't find the right one.
