Meta embeds a hidden tag in AI images

Content Seal should remain after cropping and compression. But the label is no guarantee.

Meta has launched the image model Muse Image and at the same time shows an early version of Muse Video. Images created with Muse Image in Meta's own services receive, according to the company, a hidden signal called Content Seal.

Meta states that the signal remains after, for example, cropping, compression, resizing and screenshots. It is the company's own task and should not be seen as a guarantee that all AI-created material can be discovered.

Muse Image is available in the Meta AI app and on meta.ai as well as in some other Meta services and countries. It does not appear that all parts are available in Sweden.

Hidden provenance can make it easier to show how an image was created, but requires common standards and clear information to the user.

  1. Save original file and information about which tool was used.
  2. Mark AI images openly when the context calls for it.
  3. Do not assume that a detector can prove how an image was created.
