OpenAI shuts down Atlas - save your browser data

Atlas will stop working on August 9. Bookmarks, open tabs and browsing history are not automatically moved, so users need to save what they want to keep before the stop.

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is discontinuing the Atlas browser. According to the company's help documentation, Atlas will stop working on August 9, 2026. After that, the browser may stop opening, displaying web pages, and running workflows with AI agents.

Atlas is OpenAI's browser for Mac. It can store common browser data such as bookmarks, open tabs and history. That data is not automatically moved to ChatGPT or another browser when Atlas is closed.

Bookmarks can be exported from the Atlas bookmark manager as an HTML file and then imported into, for example, Chrome. Important open tabs need to be saved as bookmarks or copied as links. Pages from the history that are needed later also need to be saved before August 9.

OpenAI writes that Atlas can offer the export of cookies where possible. Cookie and session files can provide access to logged-in services and should therefore be treated as sensitive data. The company's help page, meanwhile, says that Chrome can't always import such files.

ChatGPT conversations are separate from Atlas browser data. They will remain in ChatGPT according to the subscriptions, workspace settings and account permissions that already apply.

OpenAI instead moves web-based agent functions to ChatGPT and Codex. The company mentions, among other things, multiple tabs, downloads, better navigation and login support where the features are available. OpenAI does not publish a complete plan, country, or device list of all these replacements in the decommissioning guide.

Anyone who uses Atlas as a regular browser may lose quick access to work tabs, bookmarks and history if the material is not saved in time. For workplaces, it is also important to update internal instructions and choose a browser that continues to receive security maintenance.
